Maths practice at home, from counting to fractions
Children learn maths by practising a lot, but it should never become stressful. Smartinga has a card of its own for every part of maths, with questions that adapt to your child: when it goes well, a little harder; when they are stuck, a little easier. The maths is in Dutch, as at a Dutch school.
Try it freeSeven levels, matched to the Dutch year groups
You choose the maths level separately from the reading level. Each level fits what children learn at school in that year group:
- Niveau 0, counting: groep 1–2.
- Niveau 1 up to 10, Niveau 2 up to 20 and Niveau 3 crossing 10: groep 3.
- Niveau 4 up to 100, with the first times tables: groep 4.
- Niveau 5, times tables and more: groep 5–6.
- Niveau 6, fractions and percentages: groep 7–8.
A card for every kind of maths
There are cards for numbers, adding and subtracting, times tables and dividing, telling the time, money, measuring, shapes and patterns, maths stories, fractions and percentages, and games. The level decides which cards your child sees. Each card is a ladder of small steps, in the order Dutch schools follow too: first with the bead frame or the number line, then the bare sum.
A wrong answer is never red
If a sum does not work out, Smartinga shows the way and then asks a question like it. ‘Weet ik niet’ (I don't know) is always allowed. There is no time limit, there are no points and your child cannot lose, not even in the games. That way maths can stay something your child looks forward to.
Maths in cheerful worlds
The questions are set in the park, at the market or by the sea. Maths stories put a sum into a short little story, as in Dutch school maths books. Up to Niveau 3 the app reads every question aloud, so a child who cannot read well yet can join in too.
What you see as a parent
In the parents' area you see for each card how far your child has got and how many sums they did, and which card Smartinga suggests next, with the reason. So you know where your child stands, without marks or rankings.

Questions about maths
Can my child practise the times tables?
Yes, on the times tables and dividing card, from Niveau 4 (groep 4): first the tables of 10, 2 and 5, then 1, 3 and 4. The tables of 6 to 9 follow once those stick, or at the start of Niveau 5.
Does the maths level have to match the reading level?
No. In the parents' area you choose a separate level for maths. Many children are further along in one than in the other, and that is fine.
Are telling the time and money included?
Yes. Telling the time starts with whole hours and moves through half hours to quarter hours and minutes. With money, your child pays with coins and notes and works out the change; cents come in at the higher levels.
