Dutch reading comprehension practice with short texts
Reading comprehension (‘begrijpend lezen’ at a Dutch school) is more than reading the words: it is about your child understanding what the text says, and what it does not say in so many words. Smartinga has 110 short Dutch texts with questions, from Niveau 1 to Niveau 6, with the kinds of questions children practise at school.
Try it freeOne text, a few questions
Each text has a drawing and stays on screen while your child answers the questions, one at a time. After an answer, the sentence that holds it lights up. So your child practises looking back in the text instead of guessing. If the answer is not right, your child sees the right one straight away, with a short explanation. Nothing turns red.
The kinds of questions
The questions get harder step by step, level by level:
- Literal: the answer is in the text.
- Inference: the answer is not written down; your child works it out from what is there.
- Word meaning: what does a word mean in this sentence? From Niveau 4.
- The writer: does the text want to explain, persuade or entertain? Is something a fact or an opinion? From Niveau 4.
- Main idea: what is the text mostly about? From Niveau 5.
Short texts, a little longer each step
At Niveau 1 a text is three short sentences with one question. At Niveau 2 and 3 (groep 3) they are short stories and facts with two to four questions. From Niveau 4 (groep 4) the texts get longer, with up to six questions, and at Niveau 6 (groep 7–8) they run to about 220 words. Within a level the texts start short, with one paragraph, and grow step by step.
Help where it is needed
Your child can tap any word in the text for its explanation, just as in the stories. With the listen button the app reads the whole text aloud. With the English help switched on, your child also sees the questions in English. There is no clock: your child reads at their own pace.
What you see as a parent
In the parents' area you see how many texts your child has read and how many questions they got right. Any text can be done again; the best result is kept.

Questions about reading comprehension
When can my child start practising reading comprehension?
From groep 3, as soon as they can read short sentences: Niveau 1 has texts of three sentences with one question. From Niveau 4 (groep 4) the texts get longer and the questions harder.
What happens after a wrong answer?
Smartinga shows the right answer with a short explanation; nothing turns red. The sentence in the text that holds the answer lights up, so your child sees where to look.
How many texts are there?
110: ten at Niveau 1 and twenty at each level after that. All the Niveau 1 texts and the first text of every other level are free.
