Practise for Dutch school tests at home, calmly
From groep 3 onwards, around the age of six, most Dutch primary schools test children twice a year: in the middle and at the end of the school year. With Oefenen (practice) in Smartinga your child gets to know that format calmly at home, with no mark and no clock. The aim is not a high score, but knowing what to expect and starting relaxed.
Try it freeTwo practice tests per level
From Niveau 2, each level has two maths practice tests and two reading practice tests: Oefentoets 1 for the middle of the year and Oefentoets 2 for the end. Niveau 6 has one more: a longer test with reading, language and maths together, in the format of the final test in groep 8.
What a practice test contains
- Maths: sums from the cards of that level, from counting to fractions and percentages.
- Reading: spelling (a dictation at the youngest levels), vocabulary and, from Niveau 3, reading comprehension with texts of our own.
- At Niveau 6 also punctuation.
Every time your child starts a maths test, Smartinga makes new sums. All the questions and texts are Smartinga's own: it practises the format of the tests at school, never real test questions.
Calm, one question at a time
One question at a time, with answers to choose from, as at school. There is no time limit and no mark, and a wrong answer is never called wrong. At Niveau 2 the app reads every question aloud, because in the middle of groep 3 most children cannot read fluently yet.
After the test: what to practise?
After the test your child sees how each part went. With ‘Oefen dit’ (practise this) they go straight to the card that goes with it. You see the result in the parents' area too, so you know where your child could use a little more practice.
Practice, not cramming
A child does not need to train at home for school tests. Practice is there to know the format and stay calm. That is why a practice test shows no percentage and no ranking: only what went well and what needs a little more practice.

Questions about the practice tests
From which level are there practice tests?
From Niveau 2, the middle of groep 3: that is when the first tests come at school. At Luisteren (in maths: counting) and Niveau 1 your child is still learning to read and do sums, without tests.
Can I try a practice test for free?
Yes, Oefentoets 1 of Niveau 2 is free, for maths and for reading. The other practice tests come with the subscription and are included in the 14-day free trial.
Can my child take a practice test more than once?
Yes. In maths there are new sums every time. The reading comprehension texts stay the same, so there your child knows more the second time.
